Public School

The Grosse Pointe Public School System serves the 5 Grosse Pointes and a portion of Harper Woods, an adjacent community, with a combined area of 13 square miles. There are nine elementary schools (K-5) ,three middle schools (6-8), and two high schools (9-12). Voters in the district recently approved a second 5-year technology millage which finances $2.5 million a year in educational hardware and software.

Because this is a neighborhood school system, there are no buses required for transportation. Each school is within walking (or biking) distance from the children's homes. Private schools do offer transportation. High school students may have a longer commute so would have to provide their own transportation.

The district offers a comprehensive K-12 curriculum and a full range of special education services. The district's educational philosophy of helping every student achieve at his or her highest level is embodied in its practice of differentiated instruction. This "no walls, no ceiling" approach enables students to explore topics of personal interest and to move forward based on their own progress.

In the spring of 1991, the Grosse Pointe Public School System set a new course in its continuing efforts to provide the best possible education for all our students. "Differentiation" was born. Differentiation ensures that each student is challenged by a variety of instructional strategies suited to his or her achievement and ability levels, learning styles, and interests.

We call this our "no walls, no ceilings" approach to learning. All Students, in every classroom, at every grade level, are encouraged and nurtured to learn and grow as much as they can.
